Greyton - Passive Fire Protection Expert - Recent Projects

2 Market street

2 Market street, built by Lipman, is a complete steel structure. In Sydney's largest fire rated paint project with a total cost of $400K, Greyton has used a water based Promatect intumescent paint for the columns and beams providing up to a 2 hour rating. The FRL is predominantly 60-minutes which makes this architectural finish competitive with traditional systems. The paints were all water based which reduces fumes and minimises drying time between coats.

Cross City Tunnel

Greyton was contracted by Downer Engineering and Baulderstone Haunibrook Bilfinger+Berger to carry out extensive passive fire rating to the Cross City Tunnel with a total contract value of $250,000. The contract consisted of over 600 services penetration seals, Promatect demountable fire and sound proof walls, Fendolite vermiculite spray to ducts and essential services, access panels and fire doors and fire rated bulk heads around essential services. Most of the fire barriers had to be designed for a minimum four hour fire resistant level. All work was completed to a high standard and strict programme set out by Downer and BHBB. Greyton can provided contacts for both companies if references for the above works are required. Please click the 'tunnel specialist' to see the photos of our works.

Chatswood Substation Energy Australia

Following some serious sub substation fires Energy Australia has taken action to protect their cables with various fire rated products. This can be done with spray painted ablative and intumescent coating directly to the cables or the construction of ducts that provide insulation and integrity protection. Greyton is currently inspecting the application and certifying over 200 NSW substations being treated with Hilti, 3M and other products.

In the photos on the left, Greyton has constructed a Promatect H cable duct consisting of 2 layers of 25mm H and 2 layers of 15mm H board. The top floor section is Hebel block with a steel frame housing 9 access hatches for accessing each part of the switch board The 80mm thick Promatect and Hebel will provided a fully insulated system for a period of 2 hours and integrity for 4 hours. There are a number of fire rated removable access hatches along the duct with safety signage and heavy duty handles. This work can be viewed at 'Mechanical and Cable Duct Protection' .

One.lend lease

This Lend Lease commercial development has been built by Bovis Lend Lease. It is on Hickson road opposite the shipping terminals. Greyton was contracted to carry out the vermiculite spray work to the mechanical ventilation ducts including large fan enclosures constructed in a Promatect solid board know as Promatect L500. Greyton also carried out other fire protection systems such as the fire corridor ceilings using the same solid Promatect board as used for the fan enclosures. This work can be viewed at 'Ceilings and Partitions' .

New Haymarket Sub station

This project involved sealing of major penetrations, installing Promatetct Walls and Floor barriers, vermiculite spray and Hilti cable coatings. The project at a total cost of $300,000 had to be handed over to Energy Australia/Transgrid in just over a month. Although the schedule was extremely tight, Greyton finished on time and to the total satisfaction to Siemens. This project is one of a number undertaken by Greyton in the 'Sydney CBD and Inner Suburbs 132kV Cable Project'. Greyton has also worked in the Ventillation Chamber, the Campbell Street Substation and the Existing Surry Hills Substation. Our Clients included Siemens, Energy Australia, Downer Engineering and GHD Engineering. Photos of the works can be seen under 'Penetrations Seals' and 'Tunnel Specialists'.

Civic Tower

This tower has been built by Grocon over the old Masonic Building in Sydney. The structure is predominantly steel with massive cantilever beams at the base to carry the tower. Greyton was contracted to fire rate the entire steel structure on every level. The product used is 'Cafco 300', a vermiculite plaster spray.

The Ikon Apartments

This Potts Point refurbishment is prominent on the Sydney skyline as one looks towards Wooloomooloo. The Mirvac development has required substantial steel upgrading on every floor which has been installed by Greyton's client, Tie Fabrications. There is a combination of Intumecent Paint and Vermiculite spray application to the steel providing 1 to 2 hour FRLs. Greyton has also been awarded the mechanical duct fire rating contract by Allstaff Airconditioning. This involves vermiculite spray to ducts, fan enclosures in Promat board as well as some unusual work converting an existing lift well to a mechanical duct riser. The systems are to be fire separated in this case and two 19 story fire barriers will be installed by Greyton which will be achieved with a vermiculite barrier system.

King Street Wharf Office Tower

This latest edition to the King Street Wharf development by Multiplex involves some major mechanical duct systems including multiple Kitchen exhaust systems. Greyton has been contracted by JL Williams to undertake this project with large duct runs and fans. The ducts will be sprayed with Vermiculite while fans will be housed in fire rated enclosures. These enclosures will be constructed in Promatect L500 calcium silicate boards. Other works include sealing of electrical penetrations for Roles Electrical.

Shore Apartments 6/7 and 8/9

Currently underway this heritage redevelopment is being carried out by Mirvac and Transfield and has offered some significant challenges for Greyton. The main works involved removing lead paint from existing steel facade beams and fire rating them with Intumescent Paint. This process has been detailed under 'Steel Protection'. The FRL requirement was 2 hours which meant achieving a dry film thickness of up to 4mm in some areas. Other works completed include joint sealing, Vermiculite spray to steel and ducts, sealing of services penetrations and constructing fire rated bulk-heads in calcium silicate boards.

Sydney Theatre

Greyton is almost complete with all works for Barclay Mowlem on this latest addition to Sydney's theatres. This new state-of-the-art theatre is surrounded by heritage buildings that were used for storage of grain, wool, etc at the old docks around the turn of the century. The Bond Store buildings as they are known were constructed with timber floors supported by heavy cast iron columns shipped in from the UK. The fire protection of some 60 of these columns was the task of Greyton and maintaining the heritage appearance was the goal. There was also a substantial amount of new structural steel installed to support the renovations and this was all protected with Intumescent Paint, providing a 2 hour FRL. Vermiculite spray was used on three huge heritage beams that spanned over 30m between Bond 2 and 3 with a depth of 1.8m.

 CSIRO Building

This project was completed in late 2002 by John Holland Constructions. The extent of Greyton's work mainly involved large penetration seals which carried large pipes between the floors and laboratories. Greyton was also contracted to carry out Vermiculite spray application to the mechanical duct work as well as some structural steel protection.
