Structural Steel Proctection

Greyton has fire rated the steel structures on many Sydney landmark sites such as:

  • Moorebank Defence Project – H F Hand
  • Macquarie Shopping Centre – Westfield
  • One Central Park – Watpac
  • Miranda Shopping Centre – Westfield
  • 8 Chifley Tower – Mirvac
  • Sydney International Airport – Built
  • MEUF Star Casino – Brookfield Multiplex
  • 77 King Street – Built Constructions
  • 2 market Street – Lipman
  • Parramatta Precinct Justice Building – Multiplex
  • Landmark Tower 363 George Street – Multiplex
  • Concord Hospital – Hansen Yunken
  • HMAS Albatross Naval Base – Nowra
  • Sydney Theatre Walsh Bay
  • Shore Apartments 6/7,8/9 Walsh Bay – Mirvac

Vermiculite spray to these 25m high columns presented some logistical problems due to the head pressure for such an application. We used special high powered machinery to reach the top of these columns at this storage facility built by Buildcorp in Greystanes.

Greyton has used a Promatect water based Intumescent Paint system for the complete steel structure at the 2 Market street project. Most of the FRLs were 60 minutes which makes this system competitive with the traditional methods.

While most of these projects have been treated with Vermiculite spray applied products, Greyton has recently been involved with restoring heritage steel and coating it in layers of intumescent paint. This allows the client to display the original profile of the steel as well as protecting the structure of the member in the case of a fire.

An example of this can be seen in our recent works at the Sydney Theatre project and the Shore apartments. Both projects are in Walsh Bay, Hickson Street. Here we were able to restore cast iron columns imported around the turn of the century, maintaining the intricate lace work and column capitals.

This process involved:

  • Encapsulating the steel in a Peel-away System to remove the lead paint in a safe environmentally friendly way.
  • Water blasting the steel to a class 1.5 finish.
  • Coating the steel in a spray applied Mechacious Iron Oxide epoxy primer.
  • Applying the Promapaint Intumescent spray in layers to form a 1200-micron film (dry film thickness – DFT).
  • Checking the depth of the DFT with an electronic film gauge. Print outs from the gauge form part of the QA system.
  • Finally coating all with a Promatect Top-seal
